County Of Sarasota issued the following announcement on Oct. 01.
Carbon dioxide in our breath attracts mosquitoes!
At #SRQCountyMMS, our staff has designed and created mosquito traps that mimic our breath by releasing carbon dioxide (C02) gas as bait. We currently have 40 mosquito traps in place around Sarasota County that are timed to release C02 at twilight multiple times per week to trap mosquitoes and monitor their population.
Any trapped mosquitoes are identified and counted by our biologists, and that data is used to determine how we can best manage the mosquito population in each area. Most of these traps have been in the same place for many years to collect historical data and have been improved and updated by our scientists and fabricator over time.
Trapping mosquitoes and monitoring the mosquito population is one of the many ways in which #SRQCountyMMS helps to protect people and animals from mosquito-borne disease. For more information about Mosquito Management Services, visit: https://loom.ly/YB91Rg4
Stay tuned for our post next Friday to find out how and why we collect mosquitoes when called out on a service request at your home.
