City of Venice issued the following announcement on July 27
The Venice Division of Historical Resources (VHR) is excited to announce the launching of its Venice Gondolier Newspaper Archive website: https://veniceflmuseum.newspaperarchive.com/.
This site will allow researchers to quickly and easily access digital versions of the newspaper. Currently, the collection spans from the inaugural edition in March 1946 to December 1967. These papers can be browsed by date or through key word searches. Additional years of the newspaper will be added annually until the collection extends to 2003, when the newspaper was published electronically and is currently available through the Venice Gondolier.
The two-year project was led by Jon Watson, Venice’s Curator and Collections Manager, along with the work of digitizing firm World Archives. It began with the donation of original bound copies of the full run of newspapers to VHR by the Venice Gondolier and Adams Publishing Group. VHR staff then inspected and cleaned the collection before consolidating it at the Julia Cousins Laning and Dale Laning Archives & Research Center (LARC).
World Archives then microfilmed, scanned and uploaded over 22,000 pages of newspapers to the branded website. The website is accessible free at the LARC by scheduling an appointment. You can do so by calling 941-716-7255 or emailing archives@venicegov.com.
Those wishing to access the site from home may subscribe to the site for $29.99 annually or purchase a membership to NewspaperArchive.com, which includes over 10,000 newspapers, including the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
