U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has released a new interview as part of his Veterans History Project Series, which highlights the military service of individuals from Florida’s 17th District. The latest installment features Specialist 5th Class Joseph Reynolds, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1967.
“Specialist 5th Class Joseph Reynolds’ story is one of courage and sacrifice for his country,” said Rep. Steube. “From his time in Vietnam to the care and support he now provides for fellow Veterans in Southwest Florida, he is a shining example of a great American. On behalf of a grateful nation, I thank him for sharing his experiences in Vietnam and his ongoing work on behalf of the men and women of our Armed Forces.”
Reynolds began his military career by enlisting in the National Guard before joining the U.S. Army. He completed basic training at Fort Hood after being inducted at Fort Dix, then requested active-duty service in Vietnam and was deployed from Fort Lewis in 1965. After completing his Army service in 1967, Reynolds established a chain of taverns in New York City. He now lives with his wife Arlene in Florida’s 17th District and remains involved with veterans’ organizations such as the Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post 159 in Venice.
The interview will be submitted to the Veterans History Project (VHP), an initiative by the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center that collects and preserves oral histories from U.S. military veterans and Gold Star Families so future generations can access firsthand accounts of military service (https://www.loc.gov/vets/). The project started in 2000 and serves as a resource for researchers, scholars, and educators.
Residents of Florida’s 17th Congressional district interested in participating can find more information at https://steube.house.gov/services/vhp.
