Yulee Middle School issued the following announcement on Jan. 11.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10095 of Hilliard proudly announce winners of the Patriot Pen Essay writing competition.

Each year, nearly 68,800 students in grades 6-8 across the nation enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme.

The Patriot Pen essay 2022-23 theme was "My Pledge to Our Veterans." This was open to middle school students, grades six through eight.

A record 118 essays were turned in for consideration to the Hilliard VFW Post 10095.  Due to the number of entrants, eight students who were district qualifiers were allowed to advance to district competition from the Hilliard VFW Post 10095.

Cory Cook, Christian Domenick, Jackson Hodges, Brody Liras, Presley Manning, Brooke Mayberry, Genevieve Parden and Sophia Whiteman, all 7th graders at Yulee Middle School were chosen to represent Hilliard VFW.   Each winner received a certificate. Sophia Whiteman was selected as the Winner, Brody Liras was selected as the runner-up and Christian Domenick was selected as the third place.  These students will also receive a cash prize. All eight qualifiers will have an equal chance to win at the district level and advance to State, and National selection.
