City Of Venice, Fl issued the following announcement on Sep. 13.
On Tuesday, the Venice City Council approved placing Union Missionary Baptist Church at 404 Warfield Ave. N. on the Local Register of Historical Resources. Members of the congregation, along with church pastor Rev. James Mitchell, were on hand to celebrate the recognition with Vice Mayor Nick Pachota and Council Member Helen Moore.
The aerial photo below puts into context the 30 or more family homes in Venice's only historical black community prior to 1970, homes built possibly around the 1940s, and the church built in 1955. Land was donated by A.E. Blackburn. The small church, pictured how it looks today, is the only remaining building.
