Congressman Greg Steube, who represents Florida's 17th congressional district, used his social media platform on October 6, 2025, to comment on ongoing political and local issues. His posts addressed the federal government shutdown and a recent property tax decision in Southwest Florida.

In a post published at 14:12 UTC, Steube criticized Senate Democrats regarding the government shutdown, stating, "Today is Day 6 of the Schumer Shutdown. None of this is necessary. All Senate Democrats have to do is pass the clean CR to reopen the federal government. The only reason we are in this predicament is because Democrats want to give illegals access to Medicaid."

Later that day at 20:32 UTC, he expressed appreciation for a local policy move by writing, "Thank you to the Venice City Council for cutting property taxes here in Southwest Florida. Taxpayers deserve to keep more of their money. Your constituents thank you!"

At 22:54 UTC on the same day, Steube reiterated his criticism of Democratic priorities during the shutdown with another post: "Illegal aliens getting healthcare is more important to Democrats than paying our military servicemembers, Border Patrol agents, and federal workers.

That is why we are stuck in this shutdown. Democrats insist on free healthcare for criminals, even if it means withholding money".

The comments from Congressman Steube come amid an ongoing federal government shutdown that began after Congress failed to agree on funding legislation before the deadline. Continuing resolutions (CRs) are often used as temporary measures by Congress to fund government operations when annual appropriations bills have not been enacted; disagreements over policy provisions can stall these measures and lead to partial or full government closures.

Debates over providing Medicaid coverage for undocumented immigrants have been a point of contention between parties during recent budget negotiations. At the same time, local governments like Venice City Council have moved forward with fiscal decisions such as reducing property taxes for residents.
