CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH ACADEMY: Are you ready for BAND?

Calvary Baptist Church Academy issued the following announcement on Jul 25.

Are you ready for BAND? || Check out some FAQs below!

#cbcalakeland #calvarylakeland #calvaryhomeschoolers

1. What grades are eligible?

Band is comprised of 6th-12th grade student enrolled in either the Full or Associate Program.

2. Do I need to buy an instrument or is one provided?

Students will need their own instrument. If you do not have one already, several places rent instruments or offer payment plans. If your student is not settled on what instrument he/she would like to play, it would be best to rent. See attached rental information from Carlton Music Store.

3. Other than the instrument, what else is needed for band class?

- Every student will need to purchase a “Standard of Excellence” Book One (Book Two if your student has already completed Book One) for their specific instrument and bring it to class each week (starting the first day of class).

- Be sure to have the appropriate cleaning supplies for the specific instrument to keep it in good shape.

- If the instrument requires a reed, your student should have extras on hand in case one breaks in class.

- Although not required, it is very helpful for students to have a metronome available. Note: free metronome apps are available on smartphones and at www.metronomeonline.com if you would rather this option.

4. Where can I purchase these things? Carlton Music Store in Lakeland is who we recommend. You may also be able to find some on Amazon.

5. What instruments are acceptable for band? Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Tenor Sax, Trombone, Trumpet, Drums/Percussion, Oboe, Baritone Horn (we don’t offer instruction for string instruments at this time.)

6. Does my student need to be at a certain level before committing to band class? Our band is comprised of student of all levels of playing from beginner to advanced. Students are required to be involved, actively participating and practicing so we can grow together as a class to produce beautiful music.

7. Is anything required beyond the 1 hour Friday School class per week? Students are required to practice at home (25-30 minutes per day) to improve their skills. We also highly suggest private lessons especially if your student is a beginner. Carlton Music Store has resources for teachers who offer private lessons. See the attached form to give to Carlton if interested. Southeastern University or Florida Southern College may be able to offer a teacher once your child is at the advanced level. You will need to reach out to them once you get to this point.

8. How is it best for my student to practice from home? We have a music practice website that includes all the tracks for Standard of Excellence that they can play along with. As songs are distributed to the band throughout the school year, and if tracks are available, those will also be uploaded to the site. Visit www.calvaryonline.wixsite.com/cbca.

9. Does the band get to perform during the school year? Yes! Two of our school-wide events each year include the band performing for the student body (the Christmas Program in December and the Fine Arts Program in May). Please check the school calendar before planning any trips as being at these concerts is a requirement to be in band.
